Six degrees of Separation Group Cruise to Alaska!
Six degrees of separation is a theory that all of us as people are connected to one another by no more than six people out or 6 links.
Here is an example from Wikipedia that is fairly simply put.
If 1 person is one step away from each person they know and 2 steps away from each who is Known by 1 of the people they know... Then everyone is an average of 6 steps away from each person on earth.
I am not a mathematician but I can tell you I have had my share of small world experiences. When I talk to a person enough I can usually find a common link between the 2 of us.
Anyway, I had an Idea to get a cruise together actually a number of small groups that would belong to a larger group (the six degrees of separation group cruise) to go to Alaska next summer and all meet. I believe the potential for a Great time will be awesome!

Goree Island Senegal Africa UNECSO World Heritage Site, Home of the African Slave Trade to the Americas

The Door of No Return is what the slaves called this passageway to the ship where they would leave Africa never to return.

Goree Island Africa is a beautiful island only 3 kilometers off the coast of Dakar Senegal. Goree is very easy to get to. There is a ferry boat that goes back and forth about every hour from 7 am to 11 pm (please verify the times in advance in case of change) Goree has been ruled by Portuguese, Dutch, English and French reuniting with Senegal again in 1960. When you get to the island I recommend finding a private tour guide close to where the ferry comes in. Negotiate a tour price and ask if there is a tax you will have to pay so you know your full fee right up front.

Goree Island is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. I think the two most horrifying reminders of how cruel and corrupt some powerful people in the world can be are the Holocaust and the atrocities that took place here on Goree Island from the 15th to the 19th century. Most of the world has never heard of the horror that happened here . Four hundred years of oppression, exploitation and abuse took place on this beautiful Island. The Slave House built by the Dutch in 1776 was a large building seen in the pictures above. The upstairs was lush and comfortable, this was where the owners lived. Downstairs was horrid with dirt floors, low ceilings, no light, overcrowded conditions, no place to go to the bathroom and often times no room to lay down without being stacked worse than poorly treated animals. Men, women and children separated in order of size, health, attitude and worth. Some of the people did not weight enough to be sold so they were kept from moving by being placed in very small quarters as they were fattened like veal. Trouble makers were also kept almost in solitary confinement and very strong men were often separated so they wouldn't cause an up rise. Once the ship came to take them away they walked out through a place the people called "the door of no return". Called this because the slaves realized once they walked through those doors they would never see their loved country of Africa again.

Goree Island has also been a key naval position in many wars. You will see left over equipment and gun and cannon mounts. There are also a variety of old buildings that you will see on your tour such as a 17th century castle built by the Dutch, a Church, botanical gardens, museum, a resort and a restaurant are all located on the island. The Island has a private school that only the highest achieving children from Africa are allowed to attend. The school is not on any tours as it is kept very private. There are about 1000 people who live on the Island of Goree. You will find a few areas on the Island where locals sell their art work and crafts.

This tour was indeed an awakening for me because I would have never imagined what had happened on Goree Island Senegal. All people should see Goree island with their own eyes just as they should also visit Holocaust museums. These types of human injustices should never happen again.

Patagonia is a very beautiful natural region at the southern tip of South America. In Argentina Patagonia extends between the Andes Mountains and the Atlantic ocean. Patagonia in Chile is on the other side and extends to the Pacific ocean. So, Patagonia is a region in both the southern tips of Chile and Argentina which forms the southernmost tip of South America or cape horn! This is the farthest southern area in the world next to Antarctica. This is why so many exploration ships sail from this region to Antarctica and back.

Patagonia is a beautiful place to see some of the worlds most grand glaciers, lakes, waterfalls, fjiords, wildlife and penguin viewing. Patagonia is a paradise for those who love nature or yearn to see someplace diffrent. Is that someone you?

Crossing The Equator turns a Polliwog into a Shellback!

April 19th 2008 My husband, Daughter and I became Shellbacks!
Yeah... that means we crossed the equator on board a ship for the first time.
The shellback ceremony stems from an old naval maritime tradition which was an initiation from being a polliwog, landlubber or inexperienced sailor to becoming one of the "seasoned" sailors. This initiation was brutal involving humiliation, torture and beatings.Often times the inexperienced sailor had to eat rotten fish and garbage and be like a slave to the other shipmates. King Neptune was the judge as to a sailors worthiness. Today's shellback ceremony's are much more humane than the old traditional initiations. Commercial sailing ships do it in a very fun way to celebrate maritime customs. I must say it was quite an experience.

I was excited!! We were going on a 3 continent 22 day cruise! Yes, Yes, Yes, was my initial thought about this upcoming adventure! Then I saw Gibraltar on the list of ports we would visit. Ugh! Why would I want to visit a huge rock jutting out of the sea between the Atlantic ocean and the Mediterranean sea? After all, this is the rock that Prudential Life insurance company uses as a logo. How exciting could that be?
Well, I guess one could say I ate humble pie. Gibraltar is an Awesome and happening place with a lot to do and see!
For starters there is a Medieval castle dating back to the 11th century nestled high up on a hill. The castle looks like something you would expect to see in Monty Pythons in search of the Holy Grail with its tall tower and gate house. (very medieval looking)
The downtown is like being in England infused with certain pieces of history that can only be seen in Gibraltar.
Gibraltar is at a very narrow peninsula stuck to the end of the Iberian peninsula. It lies between Africa and Europe - separating the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean seas with what is called the straights of Gibraltar it has been a key military post through the century's.
There is a tram ride up to the top of the huge rock of Gibraltar that I recommend taking. From the top you can come up close and personal with the famous Barbary apes who are not shy. Don't bring food up and watch your bags or they will pillage you like like little Barbary apes. I know understand the why movies depict pirates as having a pet ape on board! Ahhh! From the top you can see Southern Spain's rolling hillsides, Africa and every ship that tries to pass through the straights of Gibraltar. I guess this is why you can also see a retired Military post used in Both WWI and WWII. After roaming around the military posts looking at the views and taking pictures of the apes (who love to be photographed)

Returning back to town is a delight.
If you like little British pubs you will find no shortage of those after it is a British colony. Also, the drinking age is 16 our daughter turned 16 on this cruise so she had A beer with us at the pub. Gibraltar also has every upscale clothing store most people would desire. We found that with the influence of the Pakistani, Indian and British the Punjabi food was Fantastic! I would Love to go back to Gibraltar again and again. It just goes to show things may not always be what we predetermine them to be.

Buschart Gardens are more than 100 year old of tradition and beauty. The gardens covers over 55 acres of many gardens, lakes, majestic fountains, and endless areas of bloom within a garden.
Buschart Gardens started out as a limestone quarry. The quarry was bought by a cement manufacturer from Victoria. In later years the owners wife Jenny Buchart had tons of soil brought in to fill the quarrys so she coould plant many varieies of plants and vines. What started out as a love for landscape to Jenny Buchart has become one of the most famous gardens in the world. There is something to see at Buchart Gardens year round with continoous blooms from March to November with beautiful forest and holiday light displays in the winter. If you like roses the rose garden has over 250 varietys to delight your senses featuring the special the Jenny Buchart rose. The Buchart mansion is nestled in amongst the lavish gardens with a certain beauty and sophostication. I would recommend for a relaxing afternoon lunch or high tea overlooking Jennys private garden. Although Jenny is no longer alive today the Buschart Gardens has been in the family and maintained in good tradition for over 100 years.

Dominica is located just 15 degrees north of the equator it is a lush green tropical rain forest Island. The Island of Dominica is the largest of the windward islands and the most mountainous Island in all of the Caribbean.
The islanders call it the Green Island or the Nature Island and they are very proud of its natural beauty. Dominica enjoys status of being on the list of UNESCO World Heritage sites.
Columbus discovered this lovely lush green tropical island on Sunday November 3rd 1493. The Island was inhabited by the Carib Indians who remain on this island to this day. This is the only island in the Caribbean you will still find a village of Carib Indians inhabiting. It is said that if Christopher Columbus were to return to the Caribbean today the only island that he would recognize would be Dominica due to its unspoiled natural beauty. The island is so mountainous with thick jungles that it is hard to build roads. When the roads are built they are often washed away by flash flooding during the hurricane season. The island is also home to more tropical waterfalls, birds, flora and fauna than any other island in the Caribbean. One of the beaches has a place to swim that is called the Champagne bowl because it has bubbles like swimming in a bowl of champagne. This is from fissures under the sea floor that release pressure. There is also a lake with boiling water and various hot springs from the geologic activity below.
The unspoiled Island beauty attracted Hollywood to film parts of the pirates of the Caribbean 2 & 3 with Johnny Depp in Ti Tou Gorge, High Meadow (where the cannibal scene was filmed) and Hampstead beach. This is another source of pride for the islanders who will gladly take you on a tour to see the natural back drop used in various parts of the movie for a small fee.
The official language of the island is English but most of the islanders speak a type of creole which is a French derived language. Historically, the political control of the island changed back and forth between the British and French several times in the 1700 before the British gained control in the early 1800's. Slaves were brought to the island to open some sugarcane factories but they have all closed today with only a few reminders of factory buildings and equipment remaining. The island gained its independence from the British in 1978.
We found the Islanders to be very warm friendly and proud of their Island. Most of the beaches are fine black sand from the volcanic history of the island.
We found a nice beach with a small restaurant where we tried some scrumptious local cuisine and had a local Rasta musician serenaded us for a moderate donation of cash. I would recommend this Island as a place to explore the jungles, beaches, waterfalls, hot springs a great place to snorkel or scuba dive. Enjoy this Islands natural beauty and wonders. Our Daughter had the best Birthday of her life turning 16 on this beautiful island paradise.

Skagway Alaska Nature- A True Gold Rush Town!

When you enter the tiny town of Skagway Alaska I encourage you to use your imagination. Bring yourself back to the time of The Klondike Gold Rush when the bars were bustling with miners who had just struck it rich and the dance hall girls who greeted them. Imagine riding in on your horse to tie him to the hitching post and look for food and lodging on your way to stake a claim. For me this was an easy picture to paint in my minds eye. Skagway is the most charming gold rush town I have ever experienced. The historic buildings and wooden sidewalks of the town have been restored and are in use for its customers just like in the gold rush days! My advice upon disembarking in Skagway is to first make a visit to the white pass railway station. You want to make sure you get to experience this few hour journey through the winding mountains and narrow gorges of old gold rush Alaska. Here you can still see abandoned mines, trails and old bridges from yesteryear. It is easy to imagine men with pack mules along the trails making the dangerous journey up the canyons and steep peaks in their quest for treasured gold. This train trip will not take your whole day.

You should have time if you choose to take a hike up the mountain just above town. Just stop to ask a local where to pick up the trail. We found that not many people took the hiking trail when we were there but if you are up for it this is a lovely hike.
Please remember to stay on the trail and don't wander off because the trees all look quite similar! You may see animals on your hike remember, they are wild animals so respect your distance from them, never try to touch a baby animal and never get between a bear cub and it's Mother. We hiked to the top of the mountain where we found a lake and a lot of signs that animals were around. However, the animals usually see us before we see them and they generally try to hide. On our way down the mountain we stopped at a place and looked out over they tiny town and our cruise ship parked below.

By now you should have an appetite for some fresh Alaskan sea food! You are always welcome to get back on the ship for meals and the ships try to feature local speciality foods.
However, I recommend going to a restaurant while in Skagway if you eat shell fish the Alaskan King Crab is scrumptious and if you don't the Alaskan halibut or Salmon are some of my favorites. There is nothing like freshly caught sea food!

The stores have little trinkets for sale I didn't really find shopping in Skagway to be that fantastic but it is worth looking around to see what local trinkets are like. You will see alot of joke gifts and little things to bring home to your friends.

Enjoy, enjoy, enjoy your time in Skagway.
BRING:
- a polar fleece jacket
-a roll up shell or something to repel water as it rains a lot in Alaska (but don't let that stop you from enjoying a thing)
-Hiking boots or walking shoes with a tread
-Jeans
-a light pair of long john bottoms might be nice under your jeans if it is chilly.
-a turtle neck jersey
- a headband and gloves might also be nice in case the day might be windy or cool.

-If it is Mosquito season bring repellent.(the locals joke that the mosquito is the state bird but we were not bothered when we were there)
AND a POSITIVE ATTITUDE!

When I think of old v.s new or east meets west the city of Shanghai definitely comes to mind. I don't have any current census numbers but Shanghai is for sure one of China's largest most populated cities. Shanghai is a beautiful port city that historically has had numerous altercations with raiding pirates from Japan documented as early as the 16th century and ending with the first opium war.

At the end of the first opium war a treaty called the Nanking treaty allowed western merchants to lease land and open trade in Shanghai. Shanghai quickly became a leading trade center in the east attracting industrialists and merchants from the west. Among these industrialists were many Jewish business men who brought with them western ways. During WWII many Russian and European Jews went to Shanghai to escape Nazi persecution because this was the only place in the world they could go without a visa and there was already a Jewish population there. With the founding of the Peoples Republic of China in 1949 the Jewish population pretty much dwindled. However some people remained keeping to this day a small Jewish presence in Shanghai.

During the Chinese cultural revolution1966-1976 many people were sent to work in the fields to grow food and were not allowed to receive a higher education. During the post revolution people who had labored and had limited education had to continue working hard in factories or whatever work they could find. This explains why the Chinese parents of today insist that their children study, study, study. In fact many of todays Chinese children may appear immature to westerners because they study so much they don't have a lot of time to learn social skills as the children of the west do. We had a tour guide in Shanghai who said she as well as a lot of Chinese young adults had never learned to cook, clean or do laundry so they relied on their parents to help them with these tasks long after graduating college.

While in Shanghai you must go shopping. Shanghai is like the New York or Paris of China. Trust me you will find many fashion bargains in Shanghai. If you like sewing or crafts that include textiles Shanghai is a great city to find good prices selection and quality.
Check out the food markets for another cultural insight on the lives of the Chinese people. You may be amazed at the things you can find at a open air grocery market.

If you have time take a day for a bus ride or taxi to a water city. Suzhou is a beautiful water city of canals and it is just a bus ride out of Shanghai (plan on taking the whole day).
Suzhou has more historical bridges and canals than any other city in China. This city has remained relatively unchanged since the 8th century you will have many good photo opportunities here!.

Try to schedule yourself so you will have time to stop at a silk factory. It is amazing to watch how they unwind the silk worms cocoons and spin it into lovely silk fabric. The factories that offer tours will have a shop at the end of the tour where you can buy beautiful finished silk items. I think the best item we bought was our 100% silk comforter this is a hand selected silk duvet filled with layers of silk threads we even watched its assembly. What a fabulous treasured memory we are reminded of each day when we wake up in luxury.

I believe I have found a Paradise on earth!

Blue waters of many hues, lush green jungles of coconut palms, banana trees, pineapple fresh tropical fruit and flowers galore - some I had never seen before!

It is no wonder the famous french artist Paul Gauguin feel so in love with the lush tropical landscape, blue lagoons and the gentle hearted beautiful people of the Society Islands.

My favorite Society Island is Bora Bora. We went 4 wheel driving through the lush jungles up the mountain and I was absolutely awe struck at the amazing blue hues of the ocean water below. If you like outdoor sports and beautiful scenery Bora Bora is a paradise. A group of us took jet skis around the lagoon and we had so much fun! This was followed by a visit to a motu (a small sand island communally owned) and snorkeling. A real world class diving, surfing and water sports location! The huge coral reefs that protect Bora Bora are a huge attraction to many marine life. If you are a land creature or like indoor sports at the end of the day there is a famous bar you might want to check out called Bloody Mary's.

On the islands I was pretty amazed to see baguette delivery done daily into a baguette box located at the end of the driveway - much like daily mail service! I have never had a better baguette in my life. Oh! that French recipe! Delightful! It is a good thing there are so many activities to work off the good Baguettes and wine!

My husband and I noticed the Tahitian women who are young are incredibly beautiful but they don't seem to age well at all. We kind of thought it might be a combination of wine, baguettes and a lifetime in the sun?

The best time of the year to go to Bora Bora is during their drier winter season May - October. This time of year is not exempt from a occasional downpour but it is usually over quickly and the lush greenery makes it a welcome sight. The Tahitian seasons are opposite of ours in America because they are south of the equator. November - April is the wet or rainy season when you can expect the possibility of hotter more humid weather and some rather intense rains sometimes lasting more than a day.

The Society Islands are very rich in history. This region once ruled by chiefs paddling canoes was taken over by the British and then the French in the late 1700's.

During WWII Tahai was a key ally defence post in the pacific ocean which was at times bombed.

The currency used is the Tahitian Franc however, many people will accept American dollars. Many people are able to communicate in English due to the large influx of English speaking tourists. However, the national languages are French and Tahitian.

Wow, Wow and Wow! This is a good way to express the unique experience of the Panama canal.
Let's first talk about a brief history of the Panama Canal.
After the French finished building the Suez Canal in 1869 they looked excitingly at the possibility of connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans in much the same way. This would become the Panama Canal (but not for a very long time). The long laborious process of digging and dredging began in the early 1880's. Unfortunately, diseases such as Malaria and Yellow fever in conjunction with mudslides and flooding claimed the lives of many workers and proved to be a long and costly endeavor. After much loss and many years of failure it became evident that a sea level channel cut through this jungle area would not be feasible.
Under Theodore Roosevelt America officially bought and took control of the failing canal project in1904. The Americans did not have an easy time forging on with the canal project and it's many problems either. The first order of business was to fumigate areas and kill mosquito larvae. Standing water was drained, brush cut back and oil poured over standing water that could not be drained to snuff out mosquito populations. Sanitation became a leading issue to control the mosquitoes and control disease spread by their bites.
In the early 1900's the US government decided to abandon the "French" sea level cut and adapt the current day Lock system. Seeing the locks in action as the water rises and falls passing your ship on through the canal is truly an amazing engineering marvel.
On the Atlantic side of the Canal you will see the abandon cut of the canal going into the jungle and you can imagine the sacrifice of the many men who died trying to make the canal a reality.
I recommend going to all of the lectures on board your Cruise ship regarding the building of the canal because it is very involved as well as amazing. The native inhabitants of Panama appear to be a people unaffected by time. They appear to be a proud, hard working people immersed in a wealth of ancient tradition. Their tattooed bodies and colorful clothing are and outward display that these are no ordinary people. I recommend taking advantage of meeting these people either by taking a tour to their villages (available on some cruises) or letting them come to you for example a day at Gatun yacht club will allow you to talk to these people and purchase their unique and world famous crafts.

Osaka Japan is a beautiful city it is actually the third largest city in all of Japan. Osaka is a city that is very modern but in the mist of this modern civilization you will find evidence of an ancient city not forgotten.

The Osaka Castle is one of the most beautiful castles I have ever seen. The main tower of the castle stands 8 stories high, situated on about 1 kilometer of land surrounded by shear cliffs of cut rock and surrounded by a moat. From atop the castle tower you can sport an incredible view of the city. You can imagine samurai fighting battles around the castle when it was built in the 16 century. The castle is white and the roof is green with stunning gold adornments accenting the awesome architecture.

The transportation in Osaka is tremendous with high speed trains, subways buses and anything you would expect to find in the most fantastic city's in the world. You can actually take a (nozomi) high speed train from Osaka to Toyko in about 155 minutes. and the same trip on a regular (Hikari) train will take you about 4 hours. Prepaid train tickets may be purchased in vending machines at the train stations and are convenient to have.

If you like sushi you know you should not go to Japan without eating in a sushi resturant.

Do you like to try local cuisine? Then you have to try the Tako Yaki (Octopus balls) they are not sushi they are cooked. Tako Yaki are not balls of octopus they are like meat balls only with octopus! Yummy! check out this funny u-tube I found on the making of Tako Yaki!
If you have the desire to try this delicious treat do it while you are in Osaka or you may never have the opportunity again. This is a dish that is famous primarily in Osaka. There is a take-out food stand at the Osaka castle that has them for sale!

This can be a challenge most airliners charge for overweight baggage. Usually anything over 40-50 lbs. Depending on the airlines. You should check with the airlines directly prior to your voyage. When purchasing large items such as furniture, sculptors, art or anything too cumbersome to bring home on a flight. Use your credit card to secure the payment and delivery and take a copy of the paperwork. I have had shops from around the world ship my purchases directly to me at home. This has always been a secure way for me to shop however, check with your individual credit card company prior to your voyage to clarify any questions about their policy abroad. Another option is to book a cruise that ends close to your home port. That way you can drive your treasures home with you.

Shore excursions are purely optional and there is a fee involved with most excursions depending on the ship and arrangements some ships and itinerary's include excursions.
Shore excursions may also be purchased on board according to availability. I find it is best to look through the books I will provide to you or go online and get an idea of what you would like to do. You can change your mind after you are on board if you wish but, if an excursion is sold out you may be out of luck. You may also want go online and reserve your excursions as soon as possible because the popular excursions fill up quickly and they may not be available to you on the day of sailing. You may want to do research on the area in which you are going to in advance and find your own things to do while ashore. I will be available to talk with you about that if you wish. Some of the best excursions I have been on I have planned myself in advance! Also, don't forget about seeing how you feel when you get there - you may just want to hire a limo or taxi for the day and go shopping or sightseeing.
If you don't understand the language or customs and local laws in an area it is best to be cautious. Don't flash yourself around and draw unnecessary attention to yourself. Always be courteous!! Leave jewelry on the ship in your safe and don't flash your credit cards, money, or passport around. Good common sense takes you anywhere.
If we are in a port I have been to before I might just stay on board or come back to the ship early and get a massage. The spas usually have half price specials while the ship is in port!!

Do you need to Fly to your port?

I think it is really cool to depart from a port that is just a short drive from home . This is not possible for people in all locations. Besides you don't want to travel to the same place over and over again do you? I don't!
Here are some tips for when you have to fly!
It is recommended to check in at the airport at least 2 hours prior to departure for domestic flights and 3 hours prior to international flights. Have your passport ready and always make sure your passport will be good for 6 months after you are scheduled to return home just for good measure.
Check with me, I can usually get better air fares than you can just thorough the airlines.
Baggage is usually limited by the airlines not by the cruise ship. Airlines usually allow up to 50 pounds before they charge an additional fee for overweight luggage. Please check with me to prior to departure on allowed weights. For example: air Tahiti only allows 44 pounds per passanger before they charge an excess baggage fee.
Cruise ships generally let you bring as much luggage as you desire on board. But, if you have a hobby like scuba diving check with me to find out if the ship has that equipment and will have it available while at ports.
Also check with me to get the right insurance... Not all travel insurance is the same. You want to make sure you protect your vacation investment from accident or missed flights etc.

Motion Sickness!! YECK!

If you are prone to Motion sickness (like me) you should make an appointment to see your Doctor before you leave for your cruise vacation. This most often an unnecessary occurrence that is very preventable. Not to mention most of todays ships have stabilizers that keep the motion down to a minimum. I usually get my doctor to prescribe a small patch that I wear behind my ear that slowly releases medication to keep me from getting sick. I just reapply a new patch every 3 days to the opposite side and remove the old one. There are also wrist bands and oral tablets that many people swear by and can be purchased at most pharmacy's before you leave home. Always ask your pharmacist what he recommends too because some things work better for different people. Surprisingly, a beer usually helps me a the first hint of dizzinesses. But, if all else fails you can ask the ships Doctor to give you a shot that make life good again!

I can also try to position you in a place on the ship where there is less movement. On land I have to drive my car because I get so motion sick so trust me if I can cruise so can you! Doesn't everyone like to shop? I find shopping in other country's to be a great deal of fun. I always like to do my homework before starting a cruise so that I know the exchange rates in the country's I am going to. However, this is not necessary there are always lectures on board the ship before each port during which they provide you with a wealth of information on everything you need to know.
You can also check at the pursers desk on board to get information about currency exchange rates. Usually the ships purser will change your currency for you if you desire.
Try to get a feel for the local people and to see if they like to barter of if they are insulted.
In China never pay full price for anything and walk away at least once. The people of China love a good barter.

Things to bring on a Cruise and Hot Tips

* double zip lock all of your liquids so they won't leak into your suitcase. I also use zipper bags for all of my toiletries, underwear and anything I want to keep organised.

*Downy wrinkle release! This is a hot tip! Just unpack your bags as soon as your get them into your cabin. Hang each item spritz away wrinkles and forget about it. You are now ready to have fun without worry of wrinkled clothes. Please remember to put the bottle of wrinkle release into a double zip lock bag so I won't leak in your suitcase!

*Remember to bring a good pair of sunglasses; the glare of the sun on the water may strain your eyes.

* Check with me to find out how many formal nights there will be on your cruise. I can help you plan for formal nights if you wish. Men may arrange to rent a tuxedo on the ship if they wish. Ladies can also rent formal wear on some ships but, I have never known a lady who didn't want to wear her own formal clothes.

*Suntan lotion with sunscreen is a must! The sun is very hot in many of the travel itinerary's any time of the year.

*There will be many activities on board in which to partake if you wish. However cruising is also a good opportunity to do relaxing things that you enjoy. My husband enjoys reading a good book on our balcony or in an out of the way spot on board. While I enjoy bringing some watercolor paper and a small paint kit and painting a picture diary of my voyage as we travel from port to port. There will be a small library on the ship and a variety of self enrichment classes such as art, cooking, scrapbooking or other things to choose from on sea days so check it out when you board.

*Bring comfortable walking shoes to walk around the ports and on excursions. Many ports are shoppers paradises.

* I like to bring a small bag that is comfortable to carry and one to put my purchases into that will not pull on my body and cause discomfort. LLBean makes one that is like a back pack that wraps around your body and it is a very comfortable way to carry your purchases.

*Pack a camera!!!! Bring an extra memory card or extra film so you can take lots of pictures. I usually take my laptop as well so I can upload my pictures daily. Pictures help soothe the everyday blahs long after your vacation is over!

* Laptop - most all ships have Internet available I can help advise you on what is available for you on the cruise you choose. This is a good way to stay connected with people at home while cruising. Some people even take their work to sea with them if they have a home based business or if they need to check on things at work periodically. If you do not want to tote your laptop most ships have internet rooms with computers to use or rent.

*There is a small store on board that will carry extra personal things you may have forgotten and the room will be stocked with new toiletries daily.

*A Shawl or light jacket is a good thing to remember for those chilly evenings on board.

* Do not wear flashy jewelry ashore. This could hurt your ability to barter effectively and it may also increase your chances of becoming a target of crime. Dressing and presenting yourself conservatively is the safest way to travel in unfamiliar surroundings. It is true... there is safety in numbers.

*Luggage is often opened by homeland security and sometimes by customs agents. With this in mind I like to minimize the chances of loosing my stuff. I buy Ziplock big bags it will say XXLarge on the box they are 2 ft. x 2.7 ft. and they fit perfectly in each side of a large suitcase. Just pack your stuff inside the XX large bags zip them closed and place them in your suitcase and things stay together nicely when your bags are opened! I have found these bags at target in the past.

*In recent years I have noticed the people who handle luggage tossing it around without care. I have even seen bags burst open all over the tar mat from the window on a plane. Therefore, I recommend a Luggage strap so your suitcase will not pop open spreading your belongings everywhere. A colorful luggage strap also help you differentiate your bag from others that may look alike.

* If you are not comfortable with the hair care products the ship will offer. bring bottles of your favorite shampoo and conditioner that are almost empty and you don't mind leaving on board when you go home. It is amazing how a suit case always weighs more on the return trip.
I do this with all of my toiletries. Deodorant, Tooth paste, etc. I just leave what is left over and don't think twice about it. Most drug stores have sample sizes you can buy if your trip is going to be a short one.

Anything I can leave I do! ie, umbrellas, rain coat, hair straighteners etc.

That way I can bring home my new purchases and have plenty of room.

* also, don't forget you can have things shipped home from most ports of call. This also includes things like art you may buy on board the ship. The cruise liners will ship these things home for you at a reasonable fee.

This seem like an annoyance but trust me it is necessary and quick to do.
After you have boarded the ship you will receive information that there will be a Muster drill.
This is a safety drill designed in the case of an emergency to assure everyone will know what to do... where and to whom to report. My family actually anticipates it with the excitement knowing that when it is over the fun begins and nothing else will be expected of you for the rest of your voyage.

Dining on board the ship:
All meals are included in the price of your cruise with the exception of a few signature restaurants on board some ships you need to book these in advance. The Signature restaurants usually have many courses of exquisite cuisine that is unhurried and served in a very sophisticated manner. You should plan to spend the whole evening relaxing, socializing, and dining in these restaurants. The charge is very nominal for these few specialty restaurants on board like $10.00- $40.00 is what I have seen. This is an excellent value worth a lot more! The menu is posted outside the door during daytime hours and you should make the reservations soon after boarding if you desire a more boutique dining experience. These specialty restaurants fill up quickly.
